At Keith A. Boenning, DDS, we use state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge procedures to provide effective and esthetically-pleasing results. Some of these procedures are not only restorative but cosmetic as well. For instance, we specialize in dental veneers to improve the color, shape, size, or length of your teeth. A dental veneer is a razor-thin shell that is positioned over the front of the tooth to re-create the natural look of a tooth. They are custom made to fit the contour of your teeth and improve their appearance.
When Are Veneers Appropriate?
Veneers are considered a conservative alternative to more intrusive options, like dental crowns. We may recommend dental veneers for the following issues:
In most cases, these teeth need to be in the anterior (front) region of the mouth. Teeth in the posterior may need a stronger, more durable restoration like a dental crown. However, improvements in materials have made veneers more durable than ever.
The Veneer Procedure
The dental veneer procedure is usually broken down into two or three appointments. The first appointment is a consultation, where we will determine if dental veneers are right for you. During your consultation, we will examine your teeth, discuss the procedure, and review possible treatment plans.
Once we have developed an appropriate treatment plan, we can schedule your second appointment. During your second appointment, we will prepare your teeth for the veneers. The number of teeth involved depends on your circumstance. Dr. Keith A. Boenning will prepare each tooth by removing about ½ millimeter of the enamel from the front surface. The amount is equal to the thickness of the veneer. Once your teeth are properly prepared, we will take an impression of the area. This impression will be used to fabricate your final veneer. This process may take several weeks to complete.
In the meantime, we may give you a temporary veneer, especially for severely misshaped teeth. Once your final veneer is ready, we can schedule your third appointment. During this appointment, we will check the fit of the veneer by placing it over the tooth. In some cases, we may need to trim or adjust veneer. Once we are satisfied with the fit, we will permanently bond it to the tooth using a curing light and special cement. Before you leave the office, we will check your bite and ensure your new veneer is properly positioned.
Advantages of Veneers
Most veneers this day are made from porcelain or zirconia. These materials contain the same light-reflective properties as natural enamel while being stain-resistant. They can also be textured and shaped to be virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
While the process is not reversible, it is less invasive than other options. Preserving more of your natural tooth promotes better oral health. Your gum tissues also tolerate porcelain well. By improving the appearance of your teeth, you may also notice a boost in your self-esteem and self-confidence!
