Aesthetic Gum Lift

Aesthetic Gum Lift at Keith A. Boenning, DDS, Towson, MDWhen you think about the perfect smile, you probably think about the condition of your teeth, how white and straight they are. While your teeth are an essential element of your smile, they are not the only factor. Believe it or not, your gums play a crucial role as well. Excess gum tissue can make your beautiful teeth appear small, giving you a “gummy” smile. At Keith A. Boenning, DDS, we can restore the size of your teeth, and your gum line, with an aesthetic gum lift.

What is an Aesthetic Gum Lift?

An aesthetic gum lift is also sometimes referred to as a crown lengthening. The procedure is designed to remove excess gum tissue that is affecting the quality of your smile. It restores your teeth to a more normal size, as well as restores a more natural, even gum line. In some cases, a small amount of bone may also need to be removed to provide you with the desired results.

Aesthetic Gum Lift Procedure

An aesthetic gum lift is done under a local anesthetic and can be completed in a single visit. The exact amount of time required for your procedure will vary depending upon your specific circumstances (how many teeth are being corrected, whether or not bone needs to be removed). In the past, this procedure was done using a manual scalpel. While this tool is effective, it is known for causing a significant amount of bleeding during your procedure. It also causes a significant amount of tissue trauma, which leads to pain and swelling during your recovery period.

At Keith A. Boenning, DDS, we perform your aesthetic gum lift using laser dentistry. A high-intensity laser is used in place of the scalpel. The light is approximately the thickness of a human hair and is extremely accurate. It cauterizes as it cuts away tissue, limiting your bleeding. Because it provides us with pinpoint accuracy, it also minimizes tissue trauma, which means significantly less pain and swelling after the procedure is complete.

After we administer a local anesthetic, we make incisions in your gum tissue. We then make incisions in your gums, which exposes the roots of your teeth and your jawbone. We remove the excess tissue and then stitch your gums up snugly against your teeth.

Other Uses for a Gum Lift

Gum lifts are used for more than just aesthetic reasons. They have functional purposes as well. For instance, a gum lift may be used for the placement of dental crowns. If you have excess gum tissue, and a tooth suffers damage, the tissue can prevent proper placement of the crown. By removing the excess tissue, the crown will sit where it needs to provide the most effective results. The procedure can also be used in the event of a cavity at the gum line. Removing the excess gum tissue will allow for the cavity to be completely cleaned and properly filled.

Benefits of an Aesthetic Gum Lift

There are several benefits to an aesthetic gum lift:
•  Your gummy smile is eliminated. Your teeth appear more natural in size.
•  Your gum line is evened out.
•  You will see results right away.
•  Removing excess gum tissue helps to improve your oral health.
